S. aureus is a human pathogen responsible for community and hospital-acquired invasive diseases. In the USA, approximately 3.4 million community-acquired diseases and 340.000 hospital acquired-diseases occur annually, leading to more than 30.000 deaths.
During infection, S. aureus expresses many toxins and virulent factors, which allow the pathogen to colonize the host and eventually establish a full-blown infection.
To be effective, a S. aureus vaccine should include multiple antigens in order to elicit immune responses capable of neutralizing the most relevant virulence factors.
OMVs engineering with S. aureus antigens
BiOMViS has developed a proprietary technology that enables the engineering of OMVs with multiple antigens.
Thanks to this technology, BiOMViS’ innovative S. aureus vaccine is produced by simply growing a single E. coli strain, which releases OMVs decorated with four S. aureus virulence factors.
OMVs are easily purifiable from the culture supernatant and ready for vaccine formulation, making the production process unbeatable in terms of simplicity and low costs.

Vaccine efficacy
BiOMViS’ S.aureus OMV-based vaccine elicits high titers of functional antibodies even when administered at doses as low as 1 μg and completely protects mice from both systemic and cutaneous infections. Such remarkable protection is obtained thanks to the synergistic effect of antigen-specific adaptive immunity and OMV-mediated T cell-independent immune responses.
